To work as a door supervisor in the UK you need an SIA licence, and for that you need the Level 2 door supervisor qualification. It has four units, and each one ends with a multiple-choice exam with its own number of questions, time limit and pass mark.

Your approved training course teaches you the content. This course adds extra exam practice on top: realistic door scenarios with an explanation for every answer, one level for every session of the SIA specification, and a timed mock exam for every unit.

SIA Door Supervisor sample questions

Answer each one yourself first, then open the answer and explanation. These are our own questions, written in the format of the real test.

Unit 1 – Private security industry

  1. Question 1

Which of the following is a protected characteristic under the Equality Act 2010?

    • ALength of service
    • BEmployment status (employee, self-employed, contractor)
    • CPolitical party membership
    • DReligion or belief
    Show answer

    Answer D: Religion or belief

Religion or belief is one of the nine protected characteristics under the Equality Act 2010. Length of service, employment status and political party membership are not.

Unit 2 – Door supervision

  1. Question 2

You calmly separate two customers who are squaring up to fight and escort them outside before any punches are thrown. Which licensing objective does this most directly support?

    • APrevention of public nuisance
    • BPrevention of crime and disorder
    • CProtection of children from harm
    • DPublic safety
    Show answer

Answer B: Prevention of crime and disorder

Stopping violence or disorder before it starts mainly supports the prevention of crime and disorder objective, although it can also benefit public safety.

  2. Question 3

You are checking ID at a busy entry queue. Which of these is an acceptable proof of age?

    • AA colour photocopy of a passport
    • BA PASS-hologram proof-of-age card
    • CA university student ID without a PASS hologram
    • DA handwritten birth certificate
    Show answer

    Answer B: A PASS-hologram proof-of-age card

A card with the PASS hologram is an accepted proof of age, as are a passport or photocard driving licence. Photocopies and ordinary student cards are not enough.

Unit 3 – Conflict management

  1. Question 4

When you use active listening in a difficult, emotional situation, which sequence is most appropriate?

    • AInterrupt, advise, reassure
    • BQuestion, argue, conclude
    • CListen, summarise, check understanding
    • DState your position, repeat it, enforce it
    Show answer

Answer C: Listen, summarise, check understanding

Listening, summarising what you heard and checking you understood are the key stages of active listening. Interrupting and arguing usually make people more defensive.

Unit 4 – Physical intervention

  1. Question 5

During an incident, which action is a defensive physical skill rather than a physical intervention?

    • AHolding a customer against a wall to stop them moving
    • BEscorting a customer to the exit with a two-person hold
    • CKeeping a customer on the floor with a joint lock
    • DUsing a breakaway technique to free your arm and move to a safer distance
    Show answer

Answer D: Using a breakaway technique to free your arm and move to a safer distance

A breakaway followed by moving to safety is about disengaging and protecting yourself – the purpose of defensive skills. The other three restrict the customer's movement, which makes them physical interventions.
